Pope to meet Myanmar's leader Suu Kyi

Pope to meet Myanmar's leader Suu Kyi Pope Francis will hold talks with Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday, a key moment of a tour aimed at soothing religious and ethnic hatreds that have driven huge numbers of Muslim Rohingya from the country. The keenly-watched meet in Naypyidaw comes as Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been frozen out by a global rights community that once adored her, outraged at her tepid reaction to plight of the Rohingya. After the talks, the pontiff will address Suu Kyi and diplomats in the capital -- his first opportunity to speak on a conflict that looms over his trip. The 80-year-old late Monday received a "courtesy visit" from the powerful army chief Min Aung Hlaing -- whose troops the UN and US believe have prosecuted a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya from Rakhine state. General Min Aung Hlaing has firmly denied allegations of widespread brutality by his forces, despite the flight of 620,000 Rohingya ...

Evacuation centres, hotels fill up as Bali eruption looms

Evacuation centres, hotels fill up as Bali eruption looms Evacuation centres and hotels in Bali filled up Tuesday with tens of thousands seeking refuge as a volcano on the Indonesian resort island threatened to erupt, forcing the closure of the main airport for a second day. Stranded tourists hunted for accommodation while frightened villagers living in Mount Agung's shadow made their way to more than 200 evacuation centres as the mountain gushed smoke and ash. The rumbling volcano -- which last erupted in 1963 killing around 1,600 people - forced Indonesian authorities to close Bali's airport for a second day Tuesday as experts raised the alert level to maximum. Towering columns of thick grey smoke have been rising from the mountain since last week, and in the last few days have begun shooting into the sky, forcing all flights to be grounded until at least Wednesday morning. Ash is dangerous for planes as it makes runways slippery and can be sucked into their eng...

Pakistan minister resigns after violent Islamist protests: state media

Pakistan minister resigns after violent Islamist protests: state media Pakistan's law minister Zahid Hamid has resigned, state media reported Monday, meeting a key demand of Islamist protesters who have clashed violently with security forces and blockaded the capital Islamabad for weeks.             Hamid "has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to steer the country out of crisis," the state-run news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said in a report citing unnamed official sources, without giving further details.             State television station PTV also reported the minister's resignation, without citing any sources. There was no immediate confirmation or comment from government officials.             Hamid's resignation was a key demand of the little known Islamist gro...

Pope arrives in Myanmar on high-stakes visit

Pope arrives in Myanmar on high-stakes visit Pope Francis arrived in mainly Buddhist Myanmar Monday on a highly sensitive visit to a country facing sharp global criticism for the alleged ethnic cleansing of its Rohingya Muslim minority. Catholics in colourful ethnic traditional dress waved flags and danced at Yangon's airport in a joyful welcome for the pope, making the first visit to the country by a pontiff.             The visit comes as Myanmar's military stands accused of waging an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya Muslims. More than 620,000 have fled a crackdown in northern Rakhine state for neighbouring Bangladesh over the past three months.             The pope's four-day visit intensifies pressure on Myanmar over its treatment of the stateless minority, a group he has called his "brothers and sisters" in repeated entreaties to ease their pligh...

Drone kills 7 Qaeda suspects in Yemen

Drone kills 7 Qaeda suspects in Yemen  A drone strike has killed seven suspected members of Al-Qaeda in southern Yemen, a security official said on Sunday. The United States is the only force known to operate armed drones over Yemen. "A drone likely to be American" killed all seven overnight as they were aboard three vehicles on the road from the southern province of Shabwa to the central province of Bayda, the official said. Washington considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to be the radical group's most dangerous branch. A long-running drone war against AQAP has intensified since US President Donald Trump took office in January. AQAP has flourished in the chaos of the country's civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government against the Huthi rebels. More than 8,700 people have been killed in the conflict since a Saudi-led military coalition intervened on the government's side in March 2015. Al-Qaeda's jihadist rivals, th...

Egypt reeling from attack on mosque in Sinai that killed 305

Egypt reeling from attack on mosque in Sinai that killed 305 Egypt was reeling Monday from the horrific militant attack on a mosque in northern Sinai that killed 305 people two days earlier - the deadliest assault by Islamic extremists in its modern history and a grim milestone in a long-running fight against the insurgency led by an Islamic State affiliate. Survivors and Egypt's top prosecutor have given accounts of the massacre that unfolded as more than two dozen assailants, carrying a black IS banner, unleashed gunfire and explosions during Friday prayers at the Al-Rawdah Mosque in a sleepy village by the same name near the small town of Bir al-Abd. The attackers arrived in five SUVs, took positions across from the mosque's door and windows, and just as the imam was about to deliver his sermon from the pulpit, they opened fire and tossed grenades at the estimated 500 people inside. The worshippers screamed and cried out in pain. A stampede broke out in the rush ...

Egypt mourns more than 300 killed in mosque attack

Egypt mourns more than 300 killed in mosque attack  Egypt mourned on Saturday as the death toll from a gun and bomb assault on a mosque in the Sinai Peninsula soared above 300, including children, in the deadliest attack the country has witnessed. The army said warplanes had struck militant hideouts in the insurgency-wracked North Sinai in retaliation. According to the state prosecution, up to 30 militants in camouflage flying the Islamic State group's black banner had surrounded the mosque and massacred the worshippers during weekly Friday prayers. Twenty-seven children were among the dead, it said. IS has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but it is the main suspect as the mosque is associated with followers of the mystical Sufi branch of Sunni Islam whom it has branded heretics. Funerals for the victims were held overnight and many were buried unwashed in their bloodied clothes, according to the Islamic burial practices for martyrs, security and medical off...

Argentina's Macri orders probe for 'truth' about missing submarine

Argentina's Macri orders probe for 'truth' about missing submarine President Mauricio Macri on Friday ordered an inquiry to "know the truth" about what happened to Argentina's missing submarine, the San Juan, which disappeared with the loss of its 44 crew. The 34-year-old submarine had gone through a refit and was "in perfect condition," Macri told reporters at the Argentine navy headquarters. "My commitment is with the truth," he said, adding the tragedy "will require a serious, in-depth investigation that will yield certainty about what has happened." Argentina's navy has been fiercely criticized for its handling of the operation since first reporting the submarine overdue at its Mar del Plata base on November 16. The navy took several days to say that the San Juan had reported a problem with its batteries in its final communication on November 15. Only on Thursday did the navy confirm there had been an explo...
